Arriving in Hilton Head

We spent the past two nights in Jekyll Island--well, actually just off the island, because when we arrived at 7:30 on Sunday night, the island motels were completely booked. There were two events going on, a teachers conference and also a soccer tournament. Oh well, we were very fortunate as a Quality Inn mgr. called around and found a room available in a Microtel just off the island, about 10 minutes away.

The next day we drove over to the island and found a delightful golf course to play. Beautiful setting in the pines, with lots of wild life wandering and flying around. Played a little better but it was really HOTTTTTT! After that we went to the historical district and toured some of the Jekyll Island homes which were part of the Jekyll Island Club of the early 1900s. Membership was $600 and you had to be voted in by the members. There were 53 in all and among them were Rockefeller, Crane, Moss--all the very rich people of that era. Most didn't have cooking kitchens because they could order every meal from the Clubhouse itself and have it brought to their houses---fast food from the early days, but so much better. Drove on To St. Simons Island where we had the most delicious crab cakes ever!! When we got back to the motel, it rained cats and dogs (of course literally) for three hours. We were so glad we were safe inside.

Well, we haven't tried to kill each other recently, but if Wil continues to drive from the right seat, I told him I would tape his mouth shut! And Wil is always complaining about all the stuff we have and of course--according to him--it is all mine. But on the other hand, he has complimented "Jack the Garmin" and me for actually getting us where we need to go. Sorry, Earl and Cheryl, we couldn't stand the sound of Samantha's voice. We just have our usual friendly bickering, so you can call us the "Bickersons".

Playing golf at Golden Bear at Indigo Run on Hilton Head Island tomorrow and then North tomorrow toward Richmond VA. Update tomorrow night.

On the Road Again

Hi everyone. Left Orlando today at 4:00 p.m. after spending a leisurely day at the Roths. We had a wonderful time there. The convention was fun and exhausting. Played golf Thursday afternoon at Bay Hill, our friend Greg Roth got us on. What a beautiful place and facility! It was great fun playing there and getting to see all the holes firsthand. Of course it wasn't our best scores, but it was BAY HILL!!!!!!!! We also played Friday morning at Disney World's Palm Golf Course. It was beautiful, but sooooooo hot and humid it made it difficult to enjoy--and of course we didn't score well so that all added up to a lot of frustration and exhaustion. We went to the movies with the Roths on Friday night at a theatre that had tables and served drinks and dinner while you were watching the movie. It was a unique and very nice experience. Why don't we have those in California?? If you are ever in Orlando, you should investigate the "Roth Resort" which included meals, lovely backyard pool, all the amenities of home away from home! Katy Roth, an accomplished singer/songwriter (look her up on UTube), provided us with some much needed computer classes--what more can you expect from a world class resort!

Received some disturbing news from home late Friday night. Last week Wil's mom fell off a chair while at an exercise class and didn't want to go to the dr. to get checked out. Friday she was in so much pain, they finally insisted she go to emergency. Found out she has a fractured pelvis and is currently in a convalescent center. Her grandson, Brian is helping her out and we really appreciate that. That's all we know right now.

In Orlando

After staying in Apalachacola on Thursday night and having a delightful breakfast, drove to Orlando to our friends' house--Mo and Greg. Went to a cute little bar for appetizers and drinks (of course drank too much) and we spent the night.

Checked into the timeshare on Saturday afternoon after playing some MARGINAL golf at a very nice country club. Met Alice and Ruben Sunday morning for breakfast, then registered for the convention and went to Opening Ceremonies on Sunday evening. Very impressive! Rained in the evening.

Monday, spent the entire day and evening at the convention center and didn't return until 11:00 that night. New Grand Exalted Ruler elect, Mike Smith, had a huge celebration from the state of Florida and there are some very funny photos of that. Perhaps I will get some of them on tomorrow. Went to DDGER elect, Bill Misner, dinner at Downtown Disney with the other lodges who are here from our district, came home and crashed. Rained in torrents in the evening just before we arrived at the restaurant.

Tuesday, went to the Grand Lodge sessions in the morning. Then in the afternoon we watched two teams from the finals of the ritual contest, Houston TX and Artesia NM--very impressive! We returned to the timeshare around 6:00 and are resting tonight!!!!!! More later.
