We spent the past two nights in Jekyll Island--well, actually just off the island, because when we arrived at 7:30 on Sunday night, the island motels were completely booked. There were two events going on, a teachers conference and also a soccer tournament. Oh well, we were very fortunate as a Quality Inn mgr. called around and found a room available in a Microtel just off the island, about 10 minutes away.
The next day we drove over to the island and found a delightful golf course to play. Beautiful setting in the pines, with lots of wild life wandering and flying around. Played a little better but it was really HOTTTTTT! After that we went to the historical district and toured some of the Jekyll Island homes which were part of the Jekyll Island Club of the early 1900s. Membership was $600 and you had to be voted in by the members. There were 53 in all and among them were Rockefeller, Crane, Moss--all the very rich people of that era. Most didn't have cooking kitchens because they could order every meal from the Clubhouse itself and have it brought to their houses---fast food from the early days, but so much better. Drove on To St. Simons Island where we had the most delicious crab cakes ever!! When we got back to the motel, it rained cats and dogs (of course literally) for three hours. We were so glad we were safe inside.
Well, we haven't tried to kill each other recently, but if Wil continues to drive from the right seat, I told him I would tape his mouth shut! And Wil is always complaining about all the stuff we have and of course--according to him--it is all mine. But on the other hand, he has complimented "Jack the Garmin" and me for actually getting us where we need to go. Sorry, Earl and Cheryl, we couldn't stand the sound of Samantha's voice. We just have our usual friendly bickering, so you can call us the "Bickersons".
Playing golf at Golden Bear at Indigo Run on Hilton Head Island tomorrow and then North tomorrow toward Richmond VA. Update tomorrow night.
